John Janick President, Fueled by Ramen

Panel Information

The Evolution of the 360 Deal

Wed., Sept. 29, 10:05am

"John Janick understands what kind of music teenagers like: He was a teen himself when he launched indie record label Fueled By Ramen from his University of Florida dorm room.

His first bands sold just a few thousand albums apiece. But in 2002, the Florida native hit the charts with Chicago band Fall Out Boy. The group released three albums on the Fueled By Ramen label, and two of them went platinum.

After Mr. Janick orchestrated a deal that moved Fall Out Boy to major label Island Records, his company continued to thrive, thanks to new groups such as Paramore and Panic at the Disco. In 2007, Mr. Janick inked a distribution deal with Atlantic Records and moved his label to Manhattan, 11 years after its humble launch.

“He works hard to develop a band from embryo on out,” says Atlantic Records President Julie Greenwald. “John doesn’t stay an island unto himself.”

Mr. Janick’s hands-on style has enabled him to forge a close-knit community with his artists and employees, offering both the resources of a major label and the familiarity of an indie.

“When you work constantly, you have to like the people you work with,” says the entrepreneur, who often invites artists over for dinner.

And despite industrywide woes, Fueled By Ramen’s “360 deals” which cover everything from album production to concert tours give the firm access to myriad revenue streams. The label has sold more than 10 million albums since 2003, and sources say it has annual revenue in excess of $30 million."
